A fan who took delight in the chance to view the director's cut on the set of The Beekeeper has learned new information about David Ayer's Suicide Squad. Will Rowlands, the DC fan in question, discovered David Ayer extremely invested and anxious about his opinions on the movie after seeing Suicide Squad because the filmmaker has endured a lot of criticism of his work over the years that have been distorted behind his back.
Despite being under an NDA, Rowlands spoke about Ayer's Suicide Squad since Ayer showing the film on his personal device did not break any contract. Although he could not disclose the reason for his set visit on The Beekeeper, he shared that he was thoroughly impressed with Ayer's Suicide Squad. Rowlands claimed to have been glued to the film and asserted that it was superior to the theatrical cut in terms of tone, which is consistent with the original Comic-Con Suicide Squad trailer.
SkiiWalker, a key figure in the campaign to sell Snyderverse to Netflix, recently interviewed Rowlands about Ayer's Suicide Squad. In the interview, Rowlands shared some vital information regarding the post-production meddling by the studio. After Ayer submitted his original cut, Warner Bros. secretly edited the film a second time without Ayer's knowledge. As reported by Rowlands, Ayer's cut of Suicide Squad is 10 minutes longer than the studio's cut, with a runtime of 2 hours and 24-ish minutes. The additional footage includes approximately 45 minutes of original scenes and unseen footage, featuring more of Ben Affleck's Batman, which connects better to Batman v Superman, and more of Jared Leto's Joker, which Rowlands describes as "brutal." This aligns with Ayer's previous remarks about how Leto's performance was "ripped to pieces" in the theatrical cut.
According to Rowlands, the first 20 minutes of Ayer's Suicide Squad contain deeper character development than the entire studio cut, which notably replaced an original soundtrack with popular songs chosen by Warner Bros to be more aligned with Deadpool or Guardian of the Galaxy. June and Enchantress' character arcs are more fleshed out and meaningful, while Harley Quinn's arc is liberating and empowering to women, as opposed to her returning to Joker in the studio cut. Scott Eastwood's character is also a relevant part of the story, unlike his throwaway role in the studio cut. Additionally, the film features more of Will Smith's Deadshot and his relationship with his daughter.
In the interview with Rowlands, he stated that the Ayer cut is nearly finished and only requires some minor VFX work. Furthermore, the Ayer cut is said to look better and more graphic than the studio cut. David Ayer himself expressed hope for the release of the Ayer cut, encouraging fans to keep fighting for it. This could indicate that there are ongoing discussions behind closed doors. While DC Studios is currently rebooting the DCU, the release of the Batman v Superman Ultimate Edition and Zack Snyder's Justice League shows that the company is taking steps to rectify past mistakes. Warner Bros Discovery must acknowledge its past failures and prioritize moving forward in the same direction.
Recently, there has been a leak of what appears to be David Ayer's original script for Suicide Squad on Twitter. As with any leak, it is important to take it with a grain of salt, but upon reading through it, the leaked script seems to align with much of what Ayer, Rowlands, and others who were attached to the film have confirmed in the past. This has sparked discussion among fans of the movie, and some are hopeful that the release of the Ayer cut may happen soon.
