James Gunn Assured Superman Is a 'Huge Priority' for DC, Confirms He likes Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck

With regard to their plans for the DC franchise, Warner Bros. Discovery and their recently established DC Studios unit appear to be all over the place. This week, things just become more muddled. After his appearance at the conclusion of Black Adam, Henry Cavill appeared to be slated to star in another Superman film, with writers reportedly pitching a Man of Steel sequel. Fans were overjoyed to learn that the actor would finally have a sequel to his superhero film, and the future of the DC Universe appeared to be bright.

That is, until a recent report by The Hollywood Reporter said that Cavill's Superman sequel may be abandoned in favor of James Gunn and Peter Safran's proposals for the new rebooted direction of the DC Universe.

Gunn confirm and dismiss various aspects of the report on Twitter, and honored the Richard Donner's Superman film starring Christopher Reeves on its 44th anniversary. Gunn had a hopeful response when a fan asked the co-CEO of DC Studios if we will get to see Superman again. During this time, Gunn also denied rumors that he disliked Henry Cavill and explain he a fan of Ben Affleck's Batman too.

“Yes of course. Superman is a huge priority, if not the biggest priority.”, Gunn explained to the fans asking about the future of Superman.

Since it was reported that several DCU sequels, notably Man of Steel 2, Wonder Woman 3, and Batman Beyond movie were canceled, Gunn and Peter Safran, the co-heads of DC's film, animation, and TV projects, have faced criticism from fans. While he avoided going into specifics, Gunn said in a statement that some of the reports were accurate and others weren't. Gunn claimed that Safran and he were aware that they were entering a delicate situation. He also acknowledged that not everyone will be pleased with how the DC Universe and its characters would develop in the future.

There may be further cancellations involving Cavill's Superman in addition to the Man of Steel sequel. According to rumors, DC Studios has thought of removing the actor's cameo from the upcoming The Flash movie in 2023. Given the apparent cancellation of Man of Steel 2, studio executives are debating whether or not there would be potential backlash about the cancellation.

The changes at DC Studios have drawn strong criticism from Superman fans, who have even demanded that Zack Snyder be appointed head of DC Studios. Given their apparent relationship, Snyder, who helmed the first Man of Steel film, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Zack Snyder's Justice League, has been suggested as a potential replacement for James Gunn. Snyder did reveal over a month ago he has yet to be contacted by WBD or DC about any involvement.
