James Gunn Fired Henry Cavill as Superman, Fans Are Outraged

Writer: Louis MihaelLouis Mihael

Fans were overjoyed to learn that Henry Cavill had made a comeback as Superman in Dwayne Johnson's Black Adam after years of waiting and campaigning. Their excitement, however, has been crushed and ruined as the actor has just announced that he will not be making a comeback as the Man of Steel in the rebooted DC Universe, after having a meeting where co-CEO James Gunn and Peter Safran fired the actor.

The CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, David Zaslav, is being urged through a petition to keep Henry Cavill as Superman and fire James Gunn as CEO of DC Studios. Sign the petition here:

For the past few weeks, there had been rumors about Cavill's uncertain future in the DC Universe, but fans remained optimistic that they would see the actor return as Superman as promised following the release of Black Adam and Cavill's Instagram post, saying this cameo was just a small taste of things to come. James Gunn last week went on a rant and even resorted to "your mom's basement" jokes, after YouTuber The Den of Nerds, said Gunn disliked Henry Cavill. James Gunn was quick to respond and appears to debunk this rumor by saying he likes Henry Cavill and Superman is a "High Priority". Now that it is confirmed Henry Cavill has been fired, it appears this rumor was true.

Cavill informed his tens of millions of fans on Instagram about the news on Wednesday night. "I have just had a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran, and it's sad news, everyone. I will, after all, not be returning as Superman" he wrote. Fans who were upset shared thousands of comments on the post in a matter of minutes. Given that the studio had wanted him to announce his comeback back in October, Cavill admitted that "the news isn't the easiest" to share. However, a lot has changed at Warner Bros. and DC in just two months, and with Cavill being fired as Superman, this change is for the worst.

Despite being fired from the job, Cavill was very kind in his words to Gunn and Safran. “James and Peter have a universe to build,” he wrote and wished everyone involved in future DC projects “the best of luck.” He also consoled his fans by reminding them that “Superman is still around.” His comment ended with a homage to the character itself. “My turn to wear the cape has passed, but what Superman stands for never will.”

Gunn also used social media to verify the disheartening report after he first revealed it. “Peter & I have a DC slate ready to go, which we couldn’t be more over-the-moon about; we’ll be able to share some exciting information about our first projects at the beginning of the new year,” he revealed before stating that a Superman movie is on the slate, but it’ll focus on “an earlier part of Superman’s life.” All this sound much like how Rian Johnson approached The Last Jedi, he and James Gunn only want to do their story and completely ignore and ruin the setup created by the previous movies. If Johnson and Gunn were good writers, they could have figured out how to fit want the fans wanted into their films, that fact they couldn’t prove how incompetent they truly are.

Much like the old regime, WBD followed in their footsteps, disrespecting directors, actors, and fans. WBD can’t understand how the fans they are pandering to, are not real DC fans, despite their claim they are. These fans claim it's all the fault of the Snyder fans, however, where were the “Real DC fans” at the theater, when all these movies that were made for them were released?

I am done with DC as long as James Gunn is in control, although I am interested in what movie Ben Affleck will direct in this newly rebooted DCU. Maybe it is a new Batman movie set in the James Gunn universe?
