Kevin Conroy, the legendary voice actor of Batman, has passed away at age 66. Actress for Poison Ivy, Diane Pershing, shared the heartbreaking news on Facebook: "Very sad news: our beloved voice of Batman, Kevin Conroy, died yesterday. He's been ill for a while but he really put in a lot of time at the cons, to the joy of all of his fans. He will be sorely missed not just by the cast of the series but by his legion of fans all over the world," she wrote.
In addition to other works from Warner Bros. Animation, Conroy is well recognized for providing the voice of the Dark Knight in the 1990s critically acclaimed animated series Batman: The Animated Series and Rocksteady's Arkham video games. The actor quickly established himself as the Cape Crusader's voice, and he also appeared in the live-action crossover episode of The CW's "Crisis on Infinite Earths" as an older Bruce Wayne from Earth-99. He also had live-action performances in the television series Dynasty, Matlock, Murphy Brown, and Cheers. In addition, Kevin Conroy was a familiar sight at conventions, taking time out of his hectic schedule to engage with fans and members of the media about his many ongoing projects.
Conroy helped in relief efforts after the events on September 11, 2001, in New York City by offering to cook for the police and firefighters. Conroy acknowledged his surprise at the response of the emergency service personnel to his appearance during an audio commentary for Batman: Gotham Knight DVD. Conroy called out from the kitchen to the dining area in his "Batman voice", reciting the iconic line, "I am vengeance! I am the night! I am Batman!". Emergency service employees, many of whom had watched Batman: The Animated Series, cheered and applauded in response. Conroy admitted feeling genuinely delighted and humbled by the response.
Conroy contributed "Finding Batman," a narrative that detailed his life and experiences as a gay man, for the DC Comics 2022 Pride anthology. After its release, it won praise from critics. He thanked fans for the heartfelt response in a social media video: "Hi, this is Kevin Conroy. I just wanted to take a second to thank all of you for the reactions that I've been getting to the story that I wrote for DC Pride," Conroy said. "It's been overwhelming, and it is so appreciated. You know, whenever you share something that personal, you risk, and you all made that risk so worthwhile because the support and the appreciation has been extraordinary. I just wanted to make sure you knew that. I also wanted to take a second to thank the people at DC who worked with me on this. J. Bone, Arianna Turturro, Jessica Chen, and Aditya Bikar. They were so supportive and helpful. But again, never underestimate how much I appreciate each and every
one of you and what you give me back for my performances. It means the world to me. Take care”
Conroy died at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City from intestinal cancer on November 10, 2022, at the age of 66. People who paid tribute to him included many co-stars and crew Mark Hamill, Diane Pershing, Tara Strong, Andrea Romano, and Paul Dini.
Mark Hamill, the actor who voiced the Joker opposite of Kevin Conroy’s Batman, spoke highly of working with Conroy. Hamill was once quoted regarding Conroy’s willingness to be involved in all Batman-related projects, “When they offer me roles now, I say, 'Is Kevin doing it?' ... I don't even have to read the script, if Kevin's doing it I'll do it.”
