Between Darkness and Defeat, Hope Survives… A surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one, the first major trailer for the Disney+ Star Wars show Obi-Wan Kenobi was finally revealed. Thousands of fans tuned in to learn more about the show, which will premiere on Disney's streaming platform on May 25, 2022, the 45th anniversary of the release of the original Star Wars film in 1977. This trailer debuted the first significant footage from the long-awaited and incredibly exciting series.
The premise of this series picks up some ten years after Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith ended, with our hero, Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor), residing on the desert planet Tatooine. This is where Kenobi handed Luke Skywalker over to his aunt and uncle a decade ago, and where he's spent most of his time since then, as a hermit, observing from afar, ensuring Luke's safety and privacy.
We also witness a legion of familiar warriors in black armor on the hunt for the destruction of the Jedi. In this first trailer for Obi-Wan Kenobi, we see a few different actors, a few reprised roles, and a lot of potentials.
The teaser revealed one of the most notorious villains we've ever seen in an animated series, the Grand Inquisitor. Actor Rupert Friend portrays the Jedi hunter, commonly known as the Master of the Inquisitorius. In this trailer, we see this Inquisitor (along with a few others) looking much like their counterparts from the Star Wars: Rebels animated series.
This trailer also has the Fifth Brother, perhaps the Seventh Sister, or the Eighth Brother - it's unclear at the time. In any case, we're going to witness some spinning double-bladed lightsaber action. You can bet they'll be on the lookout for the Jedi for the length of the series.
When this series was initially announced, many wondered if Obi-Wan would appear someplace other than Tatooine. The Inquisitorius will be seeking Jedi on what seems to be Coruscant, with its dazzling neon lights and bustling city life, according to this teaser. The Inquisitorius on Tatooine appears to be torturing and/or murdering locals to bring out the Jedi in this footage, which appears to take place early in the series. It's unclear whether they're aware that they're approaching Obi-Wan at this point, but they appear to run into Owen Lars right away.
Joel Edgerton reprises his role as Luke's uncle, Owen Lars. Bonnie Piesse will also return to the screen as Beru Lars, with both Piesse and Edgerton making their first appearance in the Star Wars universe since last seen in Revenge of the Sith.
Darth Vader will be played by Hayden Christiansen, and Obi-Wan Kenobi will be played by Ewan McGregor. Hayden Christiansen will appear in an Ahsoka series on Disney+ at some time, according to Disney. We haven't seen Hayden Christensen in the role of Darth Vader yet, but it's safe to assume he won't be alone on Tatooine (if at all). It's safe to assume that we'll see Inquisitor Reva on multiple planets.
This trailer confirms that Luke is still Obi-Wan's primary concern. We'll observe exchanges between Owen and Obi-Wan at the very least, if not Obi-Wan and Luke himself. We're not likely to see Darth Vader go close to Luke unless the interaction is done in such a way that the viewer gasps at how close Anakin came to knowing the boy's fate.
This new Star Wars adventure will be sure to be thrilling and loaded full of The Force, lightsabers, and a cast of familiar characters. The first episode of Obi-Wan Kenobi will premiere on May 25, 2022, on Disney+.
