Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Trailer Drops with Surprising Cameos and References!

Writer: Louis MihaelLouis Mihael

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse released its amazing trailer yesterday and it not only referenced Spider-Man: No Way Home but featured the voices of Toby Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland. Due to this surprise cameos, Andrew Garfield is trending, proving once again how popular Garfield’s Spider-Man is with fans.

In the trailer, fans can hear voiceovers of each of the live-action actors with their Spider logos in the frame, before it cuts to Shameik Moore’s Miles Morales. The lines they use and the logos all appear to be previously-existing footage, suggesting that it's possible this trailer was just assembled to emphasize the expansive nature of the Spider-Verse, even if the actors themselves don't show up in the film.

Garfield expressed his passion for this character in an interview with Entertainment Tonight from last year. The actor will always have a warm spot for Peter Parker. A tremendous outpouring of love for Spider-Man, but especially Andrew Garfield, was sparked by No Way Home.

"It's a character that's always going to be so meaningful to me, and so beautiful to me. It comes back to service. I think if there's a way, because that's what that character is all about, he's all about serving the greater good and serving his fellow people, serving humanity and all life. So, if there's a way for me to continue to add to the legacy of that character in a way that feels like it's of service to an audience, of service to the themes that Stan Lee injected that character with, I'm open, of course.”

The trailer for Across the Spider-Verse presents a fairly clear sense of the main storyline, with Miles' squad of Spider-Friends appearing to face off against a horde of elite Spider-Mans throughout the course of the film and Oscar Isaac's Spider-Man 2099, who appeared in a post-credit scene in the first film, positioned as the leader of the elites and is a significant threat to Miles.

In one clip, Miguel O’Hara aka Spider-Man 2099 references Spider-Man: No Way Home specifically Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange and Tom Holland’s Spider-man. O’Hara is seen saying “Don’t get me started on Doctor Strange and that little nerd back on Earth-199999”, in an irritated tone.

Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson are directing Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse from a screenplay by Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and David Callaham. Jake Johnson and Hailee Steinfeld return as Peter B. Parker/Spider-Man and Gwen Stacy/Spider-Gwen with newcomer Issa Rae as Spider-Woman.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse swings into theaters on June 2nd.
