Stranger Things Season 4 gets off to a good start after a two-year wait in this new ambitious and most anticipated season yet. On the surface, the biggest Stranger Things drop since the show's premiere appears to not disappoint. The episodes include some of the strongest narratives in the series, introducing the audience to a creature that has been lurking in the shadows since Season 1 and feels more sinister than everything else that came before.
It doesn't take long in Hawkins for horror to hit. A string of killings indicates that the Upside Down has a new threat: the demonic Vecna, who torments his victims in their nightmares. Furthermore, Joyce receives a mystery box indicating that Hopper (David Harbour) may have survived the Starcourt Mall explosion. Hopper did live and was secretly moved to Russia, where he must withstand life in a dark and cold prison, confirming her suspicions. Overall, it's going to be a tough Spring Break.
In addition to the expected strange things that are happening among the remaining residents in Hawkins, the new season expands the series' geographical boundaries, with much of the action in the first half of the season taking place in the sun-drenched Southwest United States and the freezing Siberian wilderness. Even when the narrative does return to Hawkins and engage in prior, Upside Down-related events, those two features simply give Stranger Things 4 a remarkably fresh vibe within the larger series, making it feel more like a welcomed return to the familiar than a cheap rehashing of old material.
Due to this expanding the series’ geographical boundaries and separating the cast from one another, the story and reunions of the characters does feel it takes longer than they should have. In this new season, each episode is much longer compared to the previous seasons. However, the overall pacing of the story never truly feels like it drags, just simply feels like it didn’t need to be that long.
Although the show features many newcomers, each character gets a considerable amount of screen time, with several characters who seemed forgotten or under-appreciated in previous seasons gaining even more screen time in the new season. Even the strongest personalities would be shaken by the events of previous seasons of the series, and Stranger Things 4 does a good job of addressing how they've developed emotionally and psychologically, as well as the visual proof of another year passing. Season 4 does a good job of spreading the love for its characters, delivering significant events and plot twists and turns for each character but never losing sight of the sense of community and family they've built while rescuing the world time and time again.
The cast brings it all to life, giving some of the best performances of the series thus far. David Harbour, Millie Bobby Brown, and Sadie Sink earn special mentions for having the most emotional moments in Season 4. Max comes to terms with the guilt and sadness she's been living with since Billy's death in the season's best episode, "Dear Billy," and the emotion Sink puts into the scene will soften even the coldest of hearts. New characters like Eddie Munson (Joseph Quinn), the leader of the "Hellfire Club," of which Dustin and Mike are members, and Jonathan's fellow stoner/pizza delivery boy Argyle (Eduardo Franco) are also standouts.
Volume 1 of Stranger Things Season 4 sets the stage for the show's most ambitious season ever, and despite a few instances where it appears to be suffering under the weight of that ambition, it greatly succeeds. The performances are all excellent, notably those of David Harbour, Millie Bobby Brown, and Sadie Sink, and the new baddie Vecna is appropriately menacing. There are also some stunning visual effects. Although not every subplot in these extra-long episodes is successful, none of them feels undeserving of the time invested. We'll have to wait and see if Season 4's final two episodes in July deliver on their promise, but for now, we can conclude that this set of episodes was well worth the wait.
