James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, has once again gone to Twitter, this time about a recent fans’ campaign to persuade Netflix to purchase the "Snyderverse" of unproduced DC movies. Gunn responded to the "#SellSnyderverseToNetflix" hashtag on Thursday. The hashtag hoped that DC and Warner Bros. Discovery would license out specific characters and properties to Netflix, ideally so that director Zack Snyder could produce his previously-planned Justice League sequels and other spinoffs as part of his larger overall deal with the streamer.
While claiming that Netflix has not shown interest in these movies, Gunn termed the campaign "the wackiest hashtag ever" and said he has spoken to the streaming service about "other stuff" (presumably, the continuation of existing Netflix and DC hit The Sandman).
The Co-CEO of DC Studio, also claimed that Zack Snyder himself "hasn't expressed any interest and seems to be happy doing what he's doing." Gunn then tweeted that he had spoken to Snyder calling the fellow director “a great guy”, who had allegedly gotten in touch with to "express his support" about James Gun and Peter Safran's new slate of DC movies.
As Gunn said, Zack Snyder has always been known as being a great guy and Snyder has shown his support to many directors multiple times, despite the critics and the media not supporting him. One could take Gunn’s statement at face value. Typically, when a CEO or some executive steps down, the previous executive always seems to support their successor. Though both directors are said to have been good friends since their days working on the Dawn of the Dead remake.
However, James Gunn had said in a past tweet that he wasn’t interested in creating a Superman movie, but now he is writing and as Peter Safran stated “hoping to direct” a Superman movie. Gunn also had said he wasn’t interested in being a Kevin Feige or Walter Hamada, Heads of Marvel and DC. Along with Peter Safran, James Gun now is the Co-Head of DC Studios. To be fair millions of things have happened since Gunn made these tweets and people do change their minds.
Is this truly the end of the SnyderVerse?
Zack Snyder himself, others and now James Gunn all revealed that Snyder is very happy working with Netflix. Snyder stated, “I’m doing my own thing here” in a podcast when ask if he was ever contacted by WBD or DC. It seems Snyder is getting the creative freedom at the steamer, that he didn’t get at WB. Army of the Dead was a hit for Netflix, which spawned several spin-offs.
Rebel Moon is the future for Snyder Fan
Currently, Zack Snyder and crew are hard at work, filming the sci-fi epic Rebel Moon. The script was originally pitched to Lucasfilm around the time Disney inquired about the franchise, for a new Star Wars movie, however, Kathleen Kennedy rejected the script. Years later, Snyder rewrite the script to be a new original IP. Speaking about the film's future as a franchise, Snyder said: "My hope is that this also becomes a massive IP and a universe that can be built out.”
James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy will be released on July 11, 2025, and Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon will be December 2023.
