Zack Snyder's Latest Project Brings Norse Myths to Life in Epic Animated Series for Netflix!

Updated: May 20, 2023

Since the release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League, the visionary director has been hard at work, creating original content for the streaming service, Netflix. In May of 2021 saw the release of Army of the Dead, later on its spin-off Army of Thieves, and this December the director will be releasing the sci-fi epic Rebel Moon, with its own expanded universe. Another one of these projects is the 2D animated action series "Twilight of the Gods," which is based on Norse mythology.

Zack Snyder is making a return to one of his roots with this new project. He made his feature film directorial debut in 2004 with the modern version of George Romero's "Dawn of the Dead," and his first project for Netflix was the undead action horror with a Las Vegas setting, "Army of the Dead." The epic ancient battle movie "300," based on the fabled Battle of Thermopylae, made its debut in 2006 and cemented Snyder's reputation as a rising talent to watch. Snyder will visit the ancient era once more in "Twilight of the Gods.”

But this time, he's moving past god-kings and oracles and embracing a true pantheon, with figures like Odin, Loki, and Thor appearing in "Twilight of the Gods.”

The Stone Quarry, a film production company run by Zack and Deborah Snyder, is collaborating with the French animation studio Xilam on the animated series "Twilight of the Gods." Xilam, a company known for producing animated shows for kids like "Oggy and the Cockroaches" and "Shuriken School," made its foray into adult animation in 2019 with "I Lost My Body," an R-rated fantasy drama about a severed hand going on a quest to find its owner. The movie received various honors and was a 2020 Academy Award nominee for Best Animated Feature.

Together with veteran DC Animated Universe director Jay Oliva, who has worked as a storyboard artist on Zack Snyder's DCEU films, and "Supergirl" writer Eric Carrasco, Snyder acts as co-created of the new animated series. Episodes will be directed by both Snyder and Oliva, with Carrasco also serving as producer.

In addition to character names that suggest we'll see the Norse gods interacting with human concerns, Netflix unveiled the impressive voice cast for "Twilight of the Gods" back in 2021. The gods are represented by the voices of Pilou Asbaek as Thor, Jamie Chung as Hel, Paterson Joseph as Loki, and John Noble as Odin. It appears that Jamie Clayton, who played Pinhead in the 2022 film "Hellraiser," will be playing another ethereal role; her part is referred to as the "seid-kona," which is Hawaiian for "witch" or "magic woman." Andvari, a shape-shifting dwarf with a magic ring from Norse mythology, will be spoken by Norwegian actor Kristofer Hivju, best known for playing Tormund Giantsbane in "Game of Thrones.”

Hrafnkel, a significant figure from the Norse epics who may be related to Lauren Cohan's character Inge, is being voiced by Corey Stoll. In mythology, Hrafnkel is a devout worshipper of the god Freyr, also known as Yngvi. Rahul Kohli as Egill, Stuart Martin as Leif, Sylvia Hoeks as Sigrid, and Peter Stormare as Ulfr make up the rest of the cast.

"Twilight of the Gods" doesn't yet have a release date
